Herefordshire
Reaching the hearts of Herefordshire
Across the country, people's estimation of politicians and institutions has taken a real hit. In Herefordshire we want this programme to achieve positive progress, with renewed enthusiasm and enhanced democratic emphasis. We want better local politics - done in a way that is understood and supported by the people who live here.
Cllr Roger Phillips, Council Leader
- Herefordshire is a large rural constituency with a strong county identity. The council has recognised for some time the value and importance of keeping an open dialogue with the people who live and work here. Above all the politicians and senior managers want to engage the 'hearts and minds' of the people of Herefordshire - by councillors, council officers and partners working together, better and differently at a local level to achieve a better understanding about what matters to people and communities.
- The aim is to engage all partners - from political skills awareness for council staff to supporting the role of the local ward member as community leader - to consider the impact of local issues on the wider agenda for Herefordshire and the working of cabinet and scrutiny functions.
- There will be four events in the autumn bringing together partners, politicians and officers which will introduce new skills and techniques that will help in working with and listening to local people. The programme is also pioneering 'village hall scrutiny' which will involve a series of local inquiries and hearings into council policies led by cross party politicians and local residents.
